I want us to look at the One that moved with compassion, the One I love with all of my heart, the One who I believe that you too love with all of your heart. He, and He alone, is the reason for this book. I want us to get a good look at Jesus and see how that he was moved with compassion towards all the people and that he is no respecter of persons. If he did it for them, he'll do it for you too!
In Matthew l4:l4, it says:
And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.
You know, most of the time, ministers today want a side door and a short-cut to the car. Let's look and see what Jesus in his ministry did when he saw all the great multitudes of people? When Jesus went forth and saw great multitudes of people, lots and lots of people, he was moved with compassion toward them! Not away from them! Not in the opposite direction but he was moved toward them!
I speak this word to you from my own personal experience, and may God forgive me for the times I personally have been guilty, but when you see people and shun them, running in the opposite direction and they, in their hearts, are seeing you as a point-of-contact, moved with the compassion of Jesus; you are not being moved with Jesus' compassion to run from the people but at best, you are simply filling a position and living out a self-centered dream likened to that of a celebrity.
It doesn't sound sweet but if you are a minister; or a follower of a minister who favors the sight of side-doors more than the sight of people, you need to find yourself another minister!
If Jesus was moved with compassion toward the great multitudes of people; was moved to get right smack-dab in the middle of them, so will we if we are truly his ministers, called by His Name, covered by His blood, and filled with His Spirit. Compassion moved Him toward them and caused him to heal them. Compassion will move you toward hurting people. It will cause you to spend nights when you do not so much as lay your head on a pillow!
I know ministers who will have serious situations arise and people will be suffering beyond belief and they'll give them an appointment two weeks or more ahead. My response as I see this is really simple. If you have a family physician and you suddenly need an operation and the doctor doesn't have time to see you, get another doctor who will see you! In the natural, I have a doctor who will prescribe me medication and take every necessary precaution to see that I'm cared for at any time be it two o'clock in the morning or two o'clock in the afternoon. If you're wasting time with a minister who doesn't have a heart to help you when you need it, find yourself a minister who will help you when you need it! When you hurt and are in need, that's not the time for a preacher to be playing Mr. Celebrity, Mr. Big Bucks, or Mr. Big Shot! That's the time to crucify self and be moved with compassion. We're not in the ministry for fame, fortune, or prestige. We're in the ministry because there is a force in the earth that yearns to mend and heal hurting people like you and me and that force is the heart of God, the Spirit of Jesus, who is the same today as he was when Matthew 14:14 was written.
I've found that it's not a matter of God being limited. He's looking for people that will pay the price and forget about their own self. People who will die out to the flesh and crucify self and get out there and I mean give their life as an extension of help and comfort, and peace of mind, and joy to people who don't have it, and don't have the knowledge necessary to understand how to get it! He wants me to be there and be strength for my weaker brother all the time, not just when I feel like it!
Now, I do understand that there is wisdom and there is a time when people do take advantage, so we do have to draw the line, however, the Holy Spirit will let you know the heart and sincerity of those seeking help and he will let you know the intentions of those seeking your personal time and undivided attention.
